Movie Night at the Museum

Wayland hosted its Plainview campus Alumni event on October 8th in the Jimmy Dean and Llano Estacado Museums. The gathering was arranged by the Director of Alumni Relations, Teresa Young, and the Director of Museums, Melissa Gonzalez. Alumni and current students were invited to stop by for some family-friendly fun.

The event kicked off with a scavenger hunt through the museums. Adults and children enjoyed exploring the museums’ exhibits on a self-guided tour while searching for items on the hunt list, such as a belt buckle in the Jimmy Dean Museum and musket balls in the Museum of the Llano Estacado. After the hunt, groups with children exited the museum and let the kids play on the lawn while they chatted with other alumni until dinner at 6 pm.

A Chicken Express dinner, as well as drinks, snacks, and goodies, were provided on behalf of Alumni Relations. At 6:30, the crowd settled in to watch the aptly selected movie, Night at the Museum, starring Ben Stiller.

“Something family friendly, but still entertaining for the adults,” Young said. “We host regular alumni events in the Plainview community and beyond, but we don’t often get to invite a lot of current students, so I loved that we were able to incorporate that into this event.”

Adults, children, and current students alike certainly enjoyed themselves, chowing down on chicken, candy, and popcorn while gasping at the appropriate intervals of the movie. The evening concluded with alumni chats and a warm farewell from Alumni Services.

Although alumni services do not plan to hold another event on the Plainview campus this semester, the museums have event plans already in the works.

“We have another event coming up the last week of October entitled Fact Phobia Scavenger Hunt Week,” Gonzalez said. “Our intern Julia Peters is hiding dolls with different facts about fears around the museum. The visitors will have to find them to answer the scavenger hunt questions.”

This event is open to everyone to come and enjoy from October 26th until November 5th.
